Barely 72 hours to the planned Lagos Yoruba rally, unknown assailants attacked the residence of popular South-West activist, Sunday Adeyemo alias Sunday Igboho in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

“I can confirm that those who came are definitely Nigerian soldiers,” Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, said in a Facebook Live chat.

“There were more than 100 soldiers that came.” Koiki claimed.

Koiki claimed some soldiers invaded the house around 1am on Thursday.

“The situation is very active as more security operatives in about seven Nigerian Army patrol vans have arrived,” Koiki said. “He (Sunday Igboho) is currently safe.”

Some of the occupants of the house were said to have been whisked away by the invaders who were dressed in military camouflage.

Igboho’s Ibadan residence was first attacked in January 2021 after he issued a seven-day ultimatum to killer herders in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

He accused the herders of being culpable for the kidnappings and killings that happened in the town.

While the intentions of the attackers are still not known, pictures making the rounds captured the vandalized residence with portions of broken walls and glasses.

Meanwhile,  Igboho’s wife was abducted by the gunmen.

The leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye, said this in a statement titled, ‘Yoruba Nation: Elements of the Nigerian Army, Accompanied by International Terrorists hired by the Nigerian State attacked Sunday Ighoho’s Residence – Akintoye’ and personally signed by him

According to Akintoye, the assailants were all dressed in military uniform and spoke French language fluently. He further said that the gunmen killed two occupants in the building and whisked Igboho’s wife and several others away.

Also, two persons were killed during the early morning attack on the residence of Yoruba rights activist, Igboho, in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The situation now is very bad. Two Yoruba sons have been killed in the house of Chief Sunday Igboho. The two dead bodies have been taken away by the military. We do not know of the location where they were taken to,” Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, said in a Facebook Live.

Koiki, who said the house was attacked around 1am on Thursday, also alleged the identities of the attackers to be soldiers.

“I can confirm that those who came are definitely Nigerian soldiers. There are more than 100 soldiers that came. The situation is very active as more security operatives in about seven Nigerian Army patrol vans have arrived.”

However, the spokesman said, “He (Sunday Igboho) is currently safe.”
