Oyo State governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, citing his earlier promise on electricity supply.
Makinde made the comment on Monday while responding to criticism over the use of diesel-powered generators to illuminate some streetlights in Oyo State.
The governor argued that critics should focus on the wider electricity challenges affecting the country.
“President Tinubu deserves no second term because he once said that if electricity is not fixed, Nigerians should not vote for him,” Makinde stated.
Recalling Tinubu’s 2023 presidential campaign, he promised to provide constant electricity and urged Nigerians not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver within his first four years.
Makinde’s remarks came after Oyo State APC governorship candidate Senator Sharafadeen Alli criticised the use of diesel generators for some state streetlights.
The governor maintained that if electricity from the national grid were reliable, states would not need to spend money on diesel to power streetlights.
Makinde’s comments have added to the political debate over Tinubu’s record on electricity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, the Presidency has previously disputed interpretations that Tinubu promised Nigerians he would not seek a second term if he failed to fix electricity.
