The Labour Party (LP), on Tuesday, December 27, announced Akin Osuntokun, an ex-aide to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, as the new Director General (DG) of the party’s presidential campaign council.

Osuntokun replaced former DG of the Obi-Datti campaign organisation, Doyin Okupe, who announced his resignation in a letter last Tuesday following a federal high court ruling in Abuja that convicted him of violating the money laundering act.

Okupe’s resignation letter was addressed personally to the presidential candidate of the LP.

After a strategic meeting between Obi, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and several chieftains of LP, the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, announced Osuntokun as the new presidential campaign DG for the party.

Abure described Osuntokun, who is the former managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), as a “worthy and trustworthy” replacement for Okupe.

Osuntokun became the south-west leader of the party after he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in August 2022.
