The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Umar Imam, has resigned. He reportedly resigned on Wednesday night to avoid being impeached during plenary session and a new speaker has been elected in his place. He is Honourable Mathew Kolawole, member representing Kaba/Bunu state constituency

At a special plenary on Thursday where the replacement was announced, members praised the former speaker for his leadership qualities. Speaking shortly after the swearing in of the new speaker, the deputy speaker, Hassan Abdullahi from Dekina/Okura constituency described the former speaker as an epitome of humility, transparency difficult to match.

Other principal officers of the House sworn in at Wednesday ‘s sitting include Victor Omofaye from Ijumu constituency who was sworn on as the Chief whip and Balogun Bello from Ajaokuta as the Majority leader.

This latest development comes two days after the resigned speaker of the State assembly escaped death by whiskers when suspected hoodlums in large numbers invaded the assembly complex, disrupting a sitting and afterward descended on the member representing Igalamela/Odolu constituency, Friday Sani aka Makama, who was just resuming sitting after being reinstated by a state High Court.

Besides the former Speaker, journalists were also at the plenary, narrowly escaped death when the thugs unleashed mayhem.
