The funeral rites of late Herbert Wigwe, the group chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc kicked off today Monday March 4th at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

It was a night of tribute by his professional colleagues to the late banker who died in a helicopter crash alongside his wife, Chizoba, his first son, Chizzy and Bimbo Ogunbanjo, a former chairman of Nigeria Exchange Group Plc in the United States.

The event was titled, ‘Celebrating Herbert Wigwe – a professional legacy.’

Leading the tributes was Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and founder of Dangote Group.

In his homage,  he described Wigwe as a visionary whose legacy in philanthropy will never be forgotten.

“He was a pillar of strength and support for me and my family,” he said.

He also named the road leading to his oil refinery after Wigwe, as a way to immortalise the late businessman.

“To immortalise my beloved friend, my brother, and my mentee, I have actually decided to name a major refinery and petrochemical road, out of the 120 kilometers, the biggest road will now be named ‘Herbert Wigwe,” he said.

Others who paid tribute to Wigwe who was  described as being fearless and audaciously bold in taking up projects many of his professional colleagues wouldn’t dare include, Segun Agbaje, CEO/Managing Director, Guaranty Trust Holding Co PLC; Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Founder and Chairman of Coronation Capital who along with Wigwe acquired Access Bank; Karl Toriola CEO MTN Nigeria; Yemi Cardoso, CBN governor; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State governor; Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun; President of the African Development Bank Group, Akinwumi Adesina etc.

Before his death, Wigwe was also the founder of his self named high institution, Wigwe University.

He was the deputy managing director at Access Bank from 2002 to 2014 when he became the group managing director and CEO.

Wigwe served as the chairman of Access Bank (Ghana), Access Investment & Securities Limited, Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS) and presently as chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited and Unified Payments Services Limited.
