Yemi Fawaz, an icon of modeling in Nigeria is dead. Yemi who was Nigeria’s first ever supermodel died yesterday at Lenox Hill hospital, New York at the age of 64. Buxomy before her death, she battled colon cancer for a while and also issues with her heart and kidney.

The late Yemi Fawaz who began her modeling career in the late 70s had packed her bags and left for the United States years ago, in 1997 precisely. She attributed her migration to the stress of the country, specifically the disappointments she faced in her modeling profession. She even ran a modeling school. While in America, she tried to get into the fashion industry; first, working with a fashion company and later focused on promoting African fashion.

She returned about 22 years ago wearing the toga of a Deaconess and a philanthropist/humantiatrian. She is survived by her 33 year old daughter, Oluwatobi.
