Covenant University, Ota, University of Ibadan and University of Lagos have emerged as the top varsities in Nigeria according to a rating by Times Higher Education.

A global body, the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assesses universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 4, which focuses on lifelong learning.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings which comprises the world’s overall, subject, and reputation rankings, alongside three regional league tables, Asia, Latin America, and BRICS & Emerging Economies which are generated by different weightings.

The 2021 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings edition covers 1,117 universities in 94 nations/regions. University of Manchester, England was ranked first globally.

The University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria and the University of Witwatersrand, all in South Africa, were rated first, second and third on the African continent.

However, in the Nigerian universities category, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State was rated number one, followed by UI, UNILAG and Edo University, founded in 2016.

Covenant University is a private Pentecostal Christian University, which has been operating with official status since 2002 in Ota, Nigeria.

In 2018, the Nigerian Universities Commission ranked Covenant the best private university in Nigeria and the sixth-best university overall.
