UNILAG honours Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Fola Adeola and Kola Adesina

The University of Lagos has conferred an honorary Doctor of Science on Ngozi Okono-Iweala, the World Trade Organisation’s director-general, Ngozi Okon

The University of Lagos has conferred an honorary Doctor of Science on Ngozi Okono-Iweala, the World Trade Organisation’s director-general, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at its 55th convocation ceremony which will span January 10 to January 17.

Also honoured at the convocation are Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, and group managing director of Sahara Power Group, Kolawole Adesina.

All three were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees for distinguishing themselves in scholarship, made groundbreaking discoveries and contributed significantly to academic and societal development.

While Okonjo-Iweala, an economist, the first woman and the first African to head the WTO has held positions as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and has been involved in various international development initiatives as well as being on the boards of Danone, Standard Chartered Bank, MINDS: Mandela Institute for Development Studies, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, One Campaign, GAVI: Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, Rockefeller Foundation, R4D: Results for Development, ARC: African Risk Capacity and Earthshot Prize, Twitter; Fola Adeola is a member of the Commission for Africa, as well as founder and chairman of the FATE Foundation, an NGO that caters to budding entrepreneurs. Fola Adeola ran for the office of the Vice President together with Nuhu Ribadu in the 2011 presidential elections.

Kola Adesina on the other hand, was a former chairman of Egbin Power Plc, and is the current board chairman of Ikeja Electric. He served as a member of the Presidential Committee inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan on the Accelerated Expansion of the Electricity Infrastructure in Nigeria, which culminated in the unbundling of PHCN successor companies.
