Do you spend precious time trying on and discarding clothes that no longer fit? Or do you have clothes you don’t wear for months in your wardrobe? Then you just may be in need of a wardrobe makeover. This New Year, you should consider overhauling your wardrobe and learn to strategically position your clothes in such a way that it will be easily accessible as well as have them wearable at all times.  Just in case you don’t know how to go about it, these few tips will give you a head start.

Clean out and organize your closet
The first thing you need to do is to take out all of your clothes and clean out your wardrobe. Get rid of items that do not belong in your wardrobe. Then take an inventory and decide what stays in the wardrobe and what leaves. It may not be easy discarding some clothes, considering the money spent on acquiring them. If you have clothes that don’t make you feel good about yourself, are too small, outdated, stained, ripped or haven’t been worn in the past year, get rid of them. After taking inventory, sort out your clothes, organize them into pants, skirts, jackets, blouses, dresses, workout clothes, party clothes, special occasion clothes etc.

Prioritize
Having narrowed your wardrobe down to only the clothes you need, you will need to prioritize. Sort out clothes that you wear regularly and those you will not be needing in months.  This wardrobe strategy will help you ensure that those clothes you will need regularly such as your casual and work clothes will be at arm’s length. This will also prevent you from wearing a few pieces continuously.

Fold and hang
Next determine which item in your wardrobe should be hung and which should be folded. That way they are at arm’s reach. Keeping everything visible makes it less likely that clothes that are on the bottom will be neglected. It also helps keep your drawers looking nice and neat. For the ones to hang, try as much as possible to maximize the space with which you can hang your clothes. You can double your hanging space with a narrow double hanging bar to hang as many pieces as possible. You can also double your shirts on the hanger so as to ensure that all items properly fits in. There may not be any need for this if you have more than enough space. Properly storing your clothing will keep them looking their best and extend their shelf life.

Get your shoes on a rack
Shoes are also part of your wardrobe items. Help your shoes maintain their shape by making a cupboard for them or hanging them on a shoe rack. Instead of hiding your beautiful shoes behind doors, place them on shelves. If you still have your shoe boxes, you can make use of them. Storing your shoes in boxes will not only lead to a more organized closet overall, but ensures your footwear remains in pretty good condition.

Hang your handbags on the top shelf
Use the top shelf of your closet to store your bags. If you have other spaces you can use them and only use the top shelf for the bags you don’t use regularly. Before you put it up there, clean after each use, stuff with paper before storing to help their shape.

Display your jewelry
You don’t necessarily have to store your jewelries in a boring box, in fact you can display them just the way you saw them displayed in a store. Even if you have a small collection, consider purchasing jewelry displays and velvet trays with dividers. The velvet prevents the jewelry from sliding around and the compartments on the trays, thus preventing them from tangling. You can also use small hooks to create a space for necklaces on the back wall of the wardrobe.

Create space for seasonal clothes
You can move your seasonal clothes to the store. You can also chose to store them in a nice box before moving them to the store. If you also have more space at the top of your wardrobe, you can put the box (es) there.

Go shopping
At this stage, after knowing exactly what you have in your wardrobe and what you are discarding, you can then prioritize on items to buy so you don’t end up buying things that you aren’t really in need of.

Be disciplined all year round
Self-discipline is key, if not, your wardrobe may go back to what it was before. Maintain the segments for every piece of clothing item. If you are going to make a purchase, think of what that item is worth replacing. If you can’t think of anything, you don’t really need it. Repeat these steps every three months so the task doesn’t become too overwhelming. The more you do this, the quicker and easier the whole process will be for you.
