Business giants Chief Kessington Adebutu and Chief Adebola Adegunwa are locked in a battle for the political future of Ogun State. Today, that rivalry is playing out through their children—Oladipupo Adebutu and Kudirat Adegunwa-Balogun.  Both carry the hopes, ambitions, and legacies of their fathers.

For over a decade, Oladipupo has pursued his dream of becoming governor of Ogun State, but victory has remained out of reach. A businessman, he is making another bid to lead the state, for the third time specifically as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the coming election.

For Kudirat, however, this is her first real opportunity to step into political office. A chartered accountant, Kudirat attended both Harvard Business School and The Wharton School. She is also a senior executive at Rite Foods Limited, the company founded by her father. She is the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). She is the running mate to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.

Few political ambitions in Ogun State have lasted as long as Kessington Adebutu’s determination to see his son become governor. Adebola Adegunwa’s ambition has taken a different path. Though less openly discussed, his daughter’s emergence as the APC’s deputy governorship candidate reflects his family’s growing political influence.

Now, both children stand at the centre of a contest that is more than politics. It is about family legacy, influence, and two fathers whose dreams may finally be decided at the ballot box.
