Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state, has been elected as the senate president for the 10th national assembly.

The former minister for Niger Delta affairs, representing Akwa Ibom south-west senatorial zone, defeated senator-elect, Abdul’aziz Yari, in the election on Tuesday morning, June 13.

Akpabio garnered highest number of votes out of the 109 votes cast by the lawmakers.

The nomination of Akpabio for senate president was put forward by Senator Ali Ndume, who presented a detailed biography of the former governor.

On the other hand, Senator Ishaku Abbo nominated Senator Abdul Aziz Yari for the prestigious role.

It is worth noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had designated the south-south region for the senate president position in the 10th national assembly, with Akpabio being the party’s preferred candidate.

Additionally, Jibrin Barau from the north-west was selected as the favoured candidate for the deputy senate president position.

However, this designation faced resistance from several lawmakers, with Yari, being one of the prominent figures opposing the decision.
