President Muhammadu Buhari at the inauguration ceremony earlier today signifying the start of his second term, did not deliver any speech. Ibrahim Muhammad, acting chief justice of Nigeria, administered the oath of office on Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
Senate President Bukola Saraki; Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives; Yakubu Gowon, former head of state, were among the dignitaries in attendance.
Since the return of democracy in 1999, this is the first time that a president would skip his inaugural speech after taking the oath of office. It is unclear if Buhari’s inaugural speech was moved to June 12, the new Democracy Day.
Earlier in the month, Lai Mohammed, minister of information in Buhari’s first term, had announced that most events for May 29 had been moved to June 12. Buhari had also, last year, declared June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of MKO Abiola, self-acclaimed winner of the 1993 election.
