Nigerian author, Farida Ado, who writes in Hausa, has been listed as one of the TIME magazine’s 2018 Next Generation Leaders. In the list that was released on Thursday, Ado was described as ‘Kano’s Jane Austen.’ 32 year romance novelist otherwise known as Littattafan Soyayya (books of love), has authored six books featuring forbidden romance, polygamy, and inter-generational drama.
On why she chose writing, she said to TIME magazine, “Women turn to romance novels to figure out how to live their own lives. Every positive example [the reader] gets on how to solve her problems is a plus to society.”
Having come from the Islamic conservative part of Nigeria where women’s rights are more restricted. “I try to reflect the reality of society in my stories,” Farida Ado adds.
Others on the list include American entertainers, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Ghanaian model, Adwoa Aboah, and seven other people. The Next Generation Leaders list is produced on a bi-annual basis to celebrate young people doing extraordinarily well in their areas of endeavours. The list started in 2014.
