A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olumide Akpata on Friday, February 23, emerged the Labour Party, LP, candidate for the September 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

Akpata polled 316 votes to win the exercise held at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, Airport Road in Benin City, Edo State capital.

His victory is coming months after he declared interest in the Edo State governorship race under the Labour Party.

Akpata had in October 2023, visited the Edo LP secretariat in Benin City to formally declare his interest in the race, pinning the decision on his love for the people.

“My interest is for the people of Edo State. And what I find out about politics and governance in Nigeria today is that the people have been taken out of the equation. Nobody cares about the people,” Akpata said.

The Street Journal had earlier reported that in the All Progressive Congress, APC, Senator Monday Okpebholo was declared winner of the governorship primary in the state.

Chairman of the election committtee and Governor of Cross river State, Bassey Otu announced the final result of the exercise in the capital, Benin city after the collating results from 18 Local Government Areas.

Okpebholo secured 12,433 votes to defeat 11 other aspirants who contested the primary election.

Also, in the Edo state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the anointed aspirant of Governor Godwin Obaseki, Asue Ighodalo emerged winner of the party’s parallel Governorship Primary.

Ighodalo, a former Chairman of Sterling Bank, emerged victorious with 577 votes.

Earlier, Philip Shaibu, Edo State Deputy Governor, had emerged winner in another gubernatorial primary held earlier on the same day. He was the only aspirant at the primary.
