Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has protested the life sentence handed to notorious drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, saying it is inhumane “A sentence for life in a hostile jail would be hard and not worth living, said López Obrador. He did, however, call Guzman out for his murderous ways and drug-fueled life of crime.
“It’s something very painful,” said López Obrador, adding that had “many victims in mind.”

Guzman will spend the rest of his life in Colorado’s supermax prison after being convicted on an array of drug-trafficking, murder and money laundering charges.

Before his sentencing, the Sinaloa Cartel leader claimed his incarceration was physical, emotional and mental torture and the most inhumane situation he had ever experienced in his entire life.

The Mexican leader, said he hoped Guzman’s sentence — while harsh — would lead to less violence in Mexico.
“We think that bit by bit the number of criminal incidents will decline. We will continue to create a better society, supported by values, that is not based on accumulating material wealth, money or luxury,” he said.
