Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, on Saturday, kidnapped the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, along Oza Road, in Orhiomwon Local Government Area of the state.

They also reportedly killed Okungbowa’s driver.

Okungbowa was said to be on his way to Benin, Edo State capital after attending a social event organised by a politician in Orhionmwon Local Government Area.

An official in the Edo State Government House, on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

“He was kidnapped on his way back to Benin City after attending an event in Oza. His driver was killed. It is very sad,” the source said.

Another top civil servant, who is close to the kidnapped Head of Service, and worked in the Ministry of Justice where Okungbowa was promoted to the rank of HoS, said, “We just got the information. It is true.”

In the past few months, the security situation in Edo State has degenerated to an all time low.

Just last month, a younger brother to the Deputy Governor of Edo state Frederick Shaibu was kidnapped by gunmen while going to drop his kids in the school near Benin City, the Edo state capital.
The children were left by the gunmen who took their father away a day before his older brother was to be inaugurated for a second term as the deputy governor of the state.
He was later released by his abductors two days after while the amount paid as ransom was not disclosed.

That kidnapping has become a very lucrative venture among criminal elements would be simply stating the obvious.

This incidence is coming two days after bandits kidnapped over 300 students of Government Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for the abduction, the state governor, Amina Masari had faulted the terrorist group, saying the abduction was the handwork of bandits who he knows and have been in talks with.

Boko Haram would later release a video of the abducted schoolboys proving they masterminded the abduction.

On the release of the schoolboys, while the state governor claimed that Miyetti Allah helped to negotiate the release of the boys, the Nigerian Army countered the state government claiming they were responsible for securing the release of the schoolboys.
