The Federal High Court in Lagos State will commence trial of Jerald Uche Lebechi, a Lagos-based businessman and entrepreneur alongside his company, Monarch and Co International Limited (Ltd.), on Tuesday, June 24 for his involvement in a $236,400 Grenada visa fraud.
The case originated from a petition filed on Monday, January 13 by a lawyer identified as Ese P. Okiti of Columbus Okaro & Co, representing Venatus Onwughalu.
The petition revealed that Lebechi received $236,400 from Onwughalu in the month of August 2021, claiming that it was for securing travel documents to Grenada for Onwughalu and his family, a service that was never delivered, nor was any refund provided.
Okiti stated that when Lebechi asked for a refund, he issued 15 cheques of N10 million each, totaling N150 million, all of which bounced due to insufficient funds.
A police investigation found enough evidence to press charges, leading to the initial filing on Friday, March 14 which was later amended on Friday, April 7.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun also brought forward an amended 21-count charge against Lebechi bordering on conspiracy and fraudulently obtaining money under false pretenses.
The trial which will be presided by Justice Ibrahim Ahmad Kala is scheduled to start on Tuesday, June 24.
