Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra State is dead.

He was aged 78.

In a statement announcing his death and signed by Cheta Chinwoke Mbadinuju on behalf of the Mbadinuju family, he revealed that the deceased passed on peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, April 11th, 2023 at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.

“With heavy hearts but utmost gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our father, grand father, uncle, friend and associate, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra State and elder statesman.

“ODERA as he was fondly called, passed peacefully at the age of 78 years on the morning of the 11th of April, 2023 at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

“At this trying time, we pray for God’s grace and mercy upon him and those left behind to mourn him. His funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family,” the statement read.

Mbadinuju was governor from 1999 at the beginning of the democratic dispensation to 2003 on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He was governor for only one term and couldn’t secure a second term because he fell out with Chris Uba, a power broker and godfather in the State.

Mbadinuju claimed that he was excluded from the governorship contest in 2003 despite winning the PDP primaries because Uba and then President Olusegun Obasanjo opposed his candidacy.

In his place, Dr. Chris Ngige ran for the PDP in the 2003 Anambra governorship.

Only last month, the incumbent governor of the stare, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo failed to add his name into the state’s Hall of Fame while other past governors and Very Important Persons in the state got recognised.

No reason was given for the omission but the exclusion of Mbadinuju’s name attracted condemnations.
