Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially declared his intention to contest for the office of president in 2019 on the Platform of the People’s Democratic Party. Abubakar announced his candidacy in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Tuesday, saying he chose the south-south state because Governor Nyesom Wike represents what he represented in 1998/99 as the live wire of the PDP.

The Turakin Adamawa, who left the ruling All Progressives Congress in December 2017, was in Rivers with the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Senator Abdul Ningi and some other party bigwigs when he made the announcement, thus putting an end to mounting speculation that he’s set to decamp from the PDP to the newly-formed Social Democratic Party as a means of actualising his presidential ambition.

Reacting to the news, Governor Wike described the former VP as a presidential candidate feared by the APC.According to Wike, the PDP is not just interested to getting power in 2019, it is out to rescue Nigeria from what he described as a period of maladministration by the APC. The governor, who played down his status in the party, called on other aspirants to do nothing to jeopardise its chances in the 2019 general elections.
