The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, resigned from office on Monday, February 23, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu during a meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja.
Preparations are now underway for a formal handover to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu of the Force Criminal and Investigation Department (FCID) annex, Lagos.
The transition is anticipated to be announced in the coming days.
Egbetokun, was appointed as the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023, with his substantive appointment confirmed by the Nigeria police council on October 31 of the same year.
Egbetokun was originally due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60.
However, an amendment to the police act by the national assembly in 2024 had cleared the way for him to serve a fixed four-year term ending on October 31, 2027, regardless of his age.
Despite the legal backing for his extended stay, the president has opted for a leadership change, bringing an abrupt end to Egbetokun’s tenure.
