The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Osun State, in a surprise political twist, has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

That party cites his ancestral roots in the state as a key reason for the endorsement.

The development was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of a PDP stakeholders’ meeting held at the government house in Osogbo, the state capital.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, PDP Chairman in the state, Sunday Bisi, Senator Lere Oyewumi, and 24 other party leaders.

“Osun State is the ancestral home of President Bola Tinubu. As a son of the soil, we believe in supporting him for another term,” the communiqué read.

“This endorsement is not partisan; it is a recognition of shared identity and political realism.”

The party also officially endorsed Adeleke for a second term in the 2026 governorship election after talks of his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC failed.

According to the communiqué, Adeleke’s decision to remain in the PDP followed strong opposition within the APC ranks to his proposed defection.

“The decision of Governor Adeleke to remain in the PDP is in response to the rejection and attacks from within the APC over his possible defection,” the communiqué stated.

“This move has further united the PDP in Osun and reaffirmed our confidence in his leadership.”

The party expressed concern over the manner in which some APC members castigated Adeleke on national television and social media, even though the governor never formally confirmed plans to leave the PDP.

“We condemn the disrespectful comments made by some APC members. Governor Adeleke has always prioritised the welfare of Osun people and should not be dragged into unnecessary partisan attacks,” the PDP Chairman  Bisi said during the meeting.

Despite speculation about internal dissatisfaction with Adeleke’s leadership, the party leaders unanimously endorsed him to fly the PDP flag in 2026.

“We are proud of Governor Adeleke’s achievements so far. His five-point development agenda is restoring good governance, and we believe he deserves to continue,” said Senator Lere Oyewumi.

The communiqué directed all party structures in the state to begin disseminating the resolutions and urged Adeleke to remain focused on delivering his administration’s development agenda.

“Governor Adeleke and all PDP members in Osun State should remain committed to the party. The leadership is united, and we must now focus on governance and service delivery,” former Oyinlola added.
