Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, has announced Lawal Daura, former director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS), as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.
A statement issued by Dotun Oyelade, commissioner for information in Oyo state, said Makinde, who is also the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), unveiled Daura on Thursday at the party’s national convention held at the government house in Bauchi.
While making the announcement, Makinde said Daura was deliberately chosen to address the security situation in the country.
Makinde announced his presidential bid on May 14 at the joint mega-rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APM in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo.
The governor, who said his ambition was informed by the need to reset Nigeria, however, noted that the task ahead was bigger than winning an election, adding that Nigerians should be given a real choice about the future of the country.
Daura served as director-general of the DSS between July 2015 and August 2018, and he was reportedly removed following a controversial DSS operation at the national assembly complex.
He was the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship aspirant for Katsina state.
He, however, announced his resignation from the party on Sunday and declared his intention to join the APM, citing injustice and instability within the ADC.
