Olisa Metuh, a former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)has turned his political ordeal into a film, thus giving an insight into what he had to endure including his prison sentence. Titled ‘Caged Bird’.
The film was produced by his wife, Kanayo with support from Metuh’s Legend Golden Care Foundation (LGCF) in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Although she claims the film is fictional, she said her husband’s legal ordeal exposed her to these realities, and that she was inspired by real-life cases from her foundation and her decision to contribute to change. The film also highlights the struggles of awaiting trial inmates and the challenges within the justice system.
The film features actors including Tobi Makinde, Ngozi Nwosu, Kelechi Udegbe, and Peace Christopher, alongside appearances by Afam Osigwe, president of the Nigerian Bar Association. Kanayo revealed that the film aims to support human rights efforts and promote advocacy for legal and systemic reforms.
A federal high court in Abuja had on February 25, 2020, jailed Metuh for 39 years after he was convicted of money laundering. Okon Abang, a judge, had found the former PDP spokesman guilty of the seven-count charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which accused him of illegally receiving N400 million from the office of the national security adviser.
The trial lasted four years. His conviction was however, nullified by a court of appeal.
