Lagos state high court sitting in Ikeja on Monday, March 9th, sentenced Obiajulu Emeka Emmanuel to one year imprisonment for defrauding an investor, Taeko Omomo, of $850,000.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos zonal directorate, Ikoyi, had initially arraigned Emmanuel in November 2025 on a 21-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence, forgery, and retention of stolen property.

The offences are contrary to the provisions of the advance fee fraud and other related offences act, 2006, and the Lagos state criminal law.

According to court records, Emmanuel had entered into a business arrangement with Omomo in 2018 to establish a company, First Unspeakable Grace Ltd, for the purpose of purchasing and developing properties.

Omomo transferred a total of $850,000 to Emmanuel to facilitate these transactions.

However, Emmanuel failed to acquire the properties and did not return the investor’s funds.

During the trial, prosecution counsel C.C. Okezie presented multiple documents that were admitted as evidence.

The court also endorsed the forfeiture of three properties belonging to Emmanuel to Omomo, backing an earlier order that had been obtained by the EFCC at the federal high court in Ikoyi before Justice Chukwujekwu Joseph Aneke.

In addition to the one-year jail term, Justice Ismail Ijelu imposed a fine of ₦1 million payable within 30 days and ordered him to be of good behaviour before the EFCC upon his release.
