Lagos has debuted a new fad, a gospel club.

This is not purely a Nigerian thing by the way as Christian nightclubs exist in the United States, United Kingdom, South America, South Africa.

The only difference between those places and Nigeria is that here, religion is not casual. Faith here is identity, family, politics.

The mistake is thinking this is about music. It’s about context. Clubs traditionally symbolize alcohol, seduction, soft life, escapism. So when worship music enters that space, the symbolism changes. It’s no longer just worship. it becomes a performance.

Nigeria is already battling performative religion. People already put up a show on social media all in the name of praying, they fast for validation and quote Bible for clout but adding performative worship to the mix?

That is the height.
