The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has requested a title change for the film A Very Dirty Christmas, produced by Nollywood actress Inio
The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has requested a title change for the film A Very Dirty Christmas, produced by Nollywood actress Iniobong Edo, popularly known as Ini Edo, following its criticism by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
In a statement released on Wednesday, December 17, the NFVCB acknowledged concerns raised by CAN and members of the public regarding the film’s title.
The regulatory body emphasized its commitment to religious sensitivity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence as fundamental principles guiding its operations.
The board stated that Nigeria’s diversity requires careful consideration to ensure films do not undermine religious harmony or offend deeply held beliefs.
“The NFVCB clarifies that the film was approved and classified after undergoing the established censorship and classification process, during which the film censorship committee examined the work within its narrative and thematic context.
“The approval of the title was not intended to disparage or trivialize the Christian faith or the significance of Christmas, but was considered as part of a fictional and creative expression,” the statement read.
The board said it has engaged the film’s producers in dialogue and formally requested a title modification to prevent interpretations that could be considered offensive to Christian sensibilities and avoid unnecessary religious tension.
The NFVCB assured the public that it operates within the provisions of the national film and video censors board act, including section 39(1), which empowers the film censorship committee to order the withdrawal of a film from exhibition for further review when necessary in the public interest.
The regulatory body expressed its openness to continued engagement with CAN, faith-based organizations, industry stakeholders, and the general public.
It pledged to ensure that films exhibited in Nigeria promote understanding, respect for religious diversity, and national unity while supporting responsible creativity and artistic expression.
The board thanked stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation as it works to fulfill its mandate in the interest of Nigerians.
