Following the first suspected case of Coronavirus in Katsina State, North-West Governors made up of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger States and Kano, have announced the closure of all schools in the zone for 30 days, noting that it had become necessary in order to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the zone.

Chairman of the forum and Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, read the communique shortly after the closed-door meeting. Masari said the closure would take effect from Monday, 23rd of March 2020. According to him, the governors would meet with examination boards to discuss the schools’ closure.

They equally admonished the general public to avoid unnecessary gatherings, urging them as well to maintain good respiratory hygiene.

Similarly, the Kwara State Government also announced the closure of its public schools from Monday, March 23rd as part of the efforts to contain the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, appealed to people not to panic but maintain basic principles of hygiene and safety measures earlier announced by the state’s Ministry of Health.
