The United States embassy and consulate in Nigeria have issued a travel advisory to its citizens, advising citizens to review their travel plans and personal security measures. This warning comes after the US military killed Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian general, in a drone attack. Following the incident, Iran had promised to carry out harsh revenge against the US.

“Due to recent world events, US citizens should review their personal security measures. While we have no specific threat information, it is prudent to remind ourselves of the following personal security actions to follow on a regular basis,” the embassy said.

“Be aware of your surroundings, keep a low profile, stay alert in public places, including schools, hospitals, government facilities, places of worship, tourist locations, and transportation hubs. Review and alter travel routes and times to reduce time and place predictability, avoid crowds and demonstrations, exercise caution when walking or driving at night, carry proper ID, monitor local media for updates.”

In reaction to the US military action, members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) popularly known as Shiites protested in the Wuse area of Abuja. Condemning the US military for killing Soleimani, the Shiites who have ties with Iran marched the streets of Abuja with songs and slogans like ‘Death to America’. They also burnt a US flag to express their displeasure. It is estimated that 90% of the Muslims in Iran are Shi’a.
