The management of the University of Lagos has set up a probe panel over the allegation of sexual abuse involving a lecturer in the university. This is in line with its zero tolerance for such allegations. This action came a week after a female student of the department of English, whose name was not disclosed, shared her story of sexual abuse and nude photographs of the lecturer, Olusegun Awonusi, a professor of English Studies at UNILAG and former Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, with popular blogger, Linda Ikeji.

Mr. Awonusi is also a former Commissioner of Education in Ogun State. The student said molestation is a way for Mr Awonusi and that she was reaching out to the public to stop the professor’s victimisation as many students had allegedly been his victims.

Also the university has also called for memoranda and is requesting the members of the University of Lagos community, particularly staff and students who have useful information on this specific allegation and any other one that could aid its assignment to submit memoranda to the panel. The memoranda should be addressed to the:

Secretary,

Fact Finding Panel on the Allegation of Sexual Harassment involving a Lecturer in the University,

c/o Registrar’s Office,

5th Floor Senate Building,

University of Lagos.

Signed,

DSA.

Recently, the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife placed a lecturer, Richard Akinola, on an indefinite suspension, after he was exposed for soliciting sex to pass a student, who later became known as Monica Osaghie.
