The chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Tony Elumelu has not only been named in the 2020 Ebony Power 100 list, he is the only Nigerian on the list. The list, released last week is produced by Ebony magazine, a monthly American publication which focuses on black people in America and is renowned globally for the focus it gives to African-American issues, personalities and interests.

The 2020 Ebony Power 100 list recognises the most influential and inspiring individuals who are making a difference in the African-American community in the following categories: Community crusaders; doing it for the culture; excellence in media; MVPs; power couples; shining stars; social justice; titans of industry; trailblazers and women up.

Elumelu was named in the trailblazing category based on the work of his foundation which has consistently supported entrepreneurs in Africa, thereby contributing to the reduction of poverty. He was named alongside 15 other powerhouses in the category, including Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago; Alexander Martin, co-founder, FUBU; Bonita Coleman Stewart, vice-president, global partnerships, Google Incorporated. Willard Jackson, Ebony Chairman and CEO, said the company is recognising and celebrating the stories and achievements of black people in all areas of American society and culture.
