While many are excited and are awaiting with bated breath for the release of Trevor Noah’s biopic, an adaptation of his book, Born a Crime, his country people are less excited for the simple fact that he chose to have Lupita Nyong’o to play his mother’s character. Just a few days ago, Kenyan born Academy Award winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o had shared her photo with the South African show host, revealing that she will be portraying his mother in his biopic which will be also be produced by the actress. Born a Crime tells the story of Trevor Noah in post-apartheid South Africa; the son of a white father and black mother, and his struggles fitting into a dysfunctional and religious community. Shortly after the news of the biopic production surfaced, many people took to social media to share their thoughts on the new project. While many of Nyong’o’s fans are pleased with the news, some South Africans are not, and this is because they feel Trevor should have chosen one of their local actors to play that role.
