The Oyo state police command, on Sunday, confirmed the escape of Sunday Shodipe, a suspected serial killer, from its custody.

Olugbenga Fadeyi, the command’s spokesman, revealed this in a statement, adding that Shodipe escaped on August 11.

Shodipe, aged 19, is standing trial in connection to the killings in Akinyele local govermment area of the state. He was apprehended in July and paraded alongside two others before being charged to court. Not less than five persons have been killed during the attacks on residents in Akinyele.

“The CP wishes to implore the general public to be on the lookout, arrest and immediately inform the officers and men of the command wherever the serial killer is sighted for immediate handing over for further action,” Fadeyi said.

“He further seizes this opportunity to appeal to any member of the public with credible information as to the whereabouts of the assailant not to hesitate in passing same to the Oyo State Police Command to assist in the apprehension of the offender who is now at large.”

The statement quoted Nwachukwu Enwonwu, the state commissioner of police, as saying the command remains committed to the protection of lives and property. He cautioned against resorting to self help when suspects are apprehended, urging that they should be handed over to the police.
