One of the candidates at the PDP governorship primaries in Anambra State, Oseloka Obaze has emerged the party’s torch bearer for the November 18th election in the state. Oseloka Obaze polled a total of 672 votes on Monday to defeat two other aspirants. His closest rival, Alex Obi-Ogbolu, scored 190 votes while the third candidate, Ifeanyi Ubah, polled 94 votes. 958 party delegates participated in the election.

Six aspirants had indicated interest to battle for the Anambra PDP governorship ticket, but three others: Stella Oduah, John Emeka and Linda Ikpeazu dropped before the process began. Obaze won the PDP ticket 24 hours after Tony Nwoye emerged winner of the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. Nwoye, a member of the House of Representatives, had scored 2,146 votes to defeat his nearest rival, Senator Andy Ubah who got 931 votes.

Obaze in a statement after he clinched victory at the PDP primary in Awka on Monday, enjoined all to join hands with him to work for the party’s victory at the poll. Obaze who described the victory as that of the party said he would remain focused, noting that he could now have a good night rest after a period of serious campaign

Obaze was Secretary to State Government (SSG) of Anambra from June 12, 2012 to June 8, 2015, under former Gov. Peter Obi, whose tenure ended on May 29, 2015, and briefly with incumbent governor, Willie Obiano.

Before his appointment as SSG, Obaze was in Nigeria’s diplomatic service and later, the United Nations, jobs that ran from 1982 to 2012. In 2013, he was a governorship aspirant under the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a Master of Arts in the same course from Nebraska Wesley University, Lincoln, U.S.

Meanwhile, 42 year old Tony Nwoye, a medical doctor and politician beat Senator Andy Uba, his closest rival to win the APC’s Anambra guber ticket scoring 2,146 votes to beat Uba, who scored 931 votes in the keenly contested primary which had 11 candidates for the November 18 governorship elections.

Tony Nwoye currently a member of House of Representatives (Anambra East/West constituency) was a student union activist before becoming a politician. In 2006, Nwoye became the substantive Chairman of the State Executive Committee of the Anambra State PDP. Nwoye was also a former Governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2013 election in Anambra state but currently a member of the All Progressives Congress.
