Fashion designer, Kate Spade is dead. She was said to have hanged herself with a scarf in an apparent suicide at her Park Avenue Manhattan apartment today. She was 55 years old.

Kate got her start in the fashion world in the ’80s working for women’s magazine “Mademoiselle” in Manhattan, when she moved in with Andy Spade, David Spade’s brother. She and Andy met while attending Arizona State University and working at a clothing store. Together, they launched herself named fashion brand, Kate Spade Handbags in 1993, and it blossomed into a full-scale clothing and jewelry line. She would later sell her company in 2007 to rival design house, Coach in a deal worth $2.4bn and took some time off to raise her daughter but got back in the game in 2016 by launching a new fashion brand called Frances Valentine, named after her daughter, who’s now 13 years old.

Kate Spade who was best known for her accessory line grew her brand to having more than 300 branches worldwide. It is recognizable for its distinctive logo which features the spades playing card symbol, in reference to the designer’s surname. The designer whose body was found by her house keeper, left behind a note but police have declined to discuss its contents.
