The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has moved to debunk claims of graft by making public his pay slip for April. Taking to his Instagram handle the Emir posted a snapshot of his pay slip for April showing he receives N1,246,875.00 monthly as opposed to the N12 million being alleged in many quarters.

There were shockwaves across the country last week when it emerged that the Kano emirate had been summoned by the anti-corruption agency on suspicion of embezzlement and graft.

At the behest of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, anti-corruption investigators stormed the emirate to look into the accounts of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, following allegations of gross mismanagement of royal finances.
“We have gone far in the investigation, to safeguard the honour and prestige of the emirate council,” the head of the anti-corruption unit in the northern state of Kano, Muhyi Magaji, had said.

The state government is accusing the revered Emir of spending over six billion naira of palace funds to pay for luxury cars, chartered flights, phone and internet bills as well as other personal expenses.

This was swiftly denied by the emirate treasurer, the Walin Kano, Bashir Wali, who said the emirate had only spent N3.4 billion ($11,127,520) since Sanusi assumed the throne in June 2014.
“The Emir Sanusi inherited N2.9 billion (exactly N2.895,165,43.77) – $9,491,120 – and not N4 billion as stated in some media reports,” he explained.

There are suspicions in certain quarters that some in high places want the erudite monarch removed following his bold call for social reforms in the ultra-conservative north. In several speaking engagements over the past year, the former CBN governor has been critical of the Kano government and Muslim leaders over corruption, religious, educational and societal issues, particularly calling out the Zamfara State Governor over comments on the meningitis epidemic.

He has also openly condemned child marriages, accusing the north of clinging to the myth of an Islamic society that never existed. These haven’t been well taken in the north, and it hasn’t come as a surprise that he’s under a probe considering that no comparisons have been made between his expenditures and that of his predecessor, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

But the bold Emir has retained popular support with many praying for more grace as he steers the emirate forward and other citing him as an example for others to follow.
