Whether you like buying into trends or prefer to stick with the basics, you need to add pastel to your wardrobe. Soft hues are a classic staple and are timeless enough that you can wear them year after year, yet when styled just right, they’re also super trendy and cool. They can be tricky to pull off, one false move and you look like a five-year-old who’s getting ready for an Easter parade. Here are ways to pull off the look with aplomb.

Start with a neutral base
If you’re more of a black, white, and navy kind of gal, tone your pastels down with a neutral base.

Go monochrome

Choose one color and stick with it throughout your outfit.

Choose grown-up silhouettes

You run the risk of looking like a little girl if your pastels are overly flouncy. Avoid this and go for grown up silhouettes to project a more mature feel.

Incorporate dark neutrals

One gray top is all you need to keep the look in line. Wear it over a white button-down to break up the sea of sugar-spun colors.

Colour block it
If you’re unafraid to jump on the pastel bandwagon, color blocking will keep you sweet and sophisticated. Go darker on the bottom and lighter on top with two pieces in the same color family. Or, take your ensemble up a few notches with bright bottoms and a pastel top.

Don’t overdo it
When figuring out how to wear pastels, remember to keep hair and makeup simple so it doesn’t overpower your outfit.
