Former model now fashion consultant, socialite and fashionista, Chalya Shagaya has found a new way to express herself, through photography. Chalya Shagaya who is the daughter of Brig. Gen. John Shagaya rtd, recently decided to explore other areas of the art by taking a photography course in Abuja where she is based, with renowned photo studio, Big H Studios. Apparently she specialized in conceptual/fine art photography because just as soon as she completed her course, she sold some of her works which she used as learning projects with the proceeds going to charity. Chalya Shagaya who used to be a recurring figure on the social scene in Lagos had to relocate to New York a few years ago when she suffered a heart break. After a long hiatus from the social scene, she finally made a return home. In her late 30s and still single, she made inroads as fashion PR manager, invading the western market with African fashion. She was able to achieve this because of the strong clientele of African designers, socialites and fashionistas. During her time in America, she helped these same personalities break into the U.S market with Deola Sagoe being one of her biggest success. She has since expanded her fashion consultancy on press, marketing and branding strategies to U.S-based designers like Korto Momolu of Project Runway, as well as a number of African recording artists.
